Sammys at the Black Camel

This little Rosedale sandwich shop may seem a bit non descript to some, but those who are in the know with regulars that keep coming back for more know that this is where gourmet sandwiches live.

There are only 5 sandwiches to choose from - a simple menu but all their sandwiches are done very well. The options are:
  • Roasted Beef Brisket
  • Pulled BBQ Pork Shoulder
  • Seared Steak
  • Free Range Chicken
  • Roasted Roma Tomato, Sweet Red Pepper, Arugula and Eggplant
The regulars always come back for the pulled pork sandwich swearing that it's the best in the city. Of course I have to try it and make my own judgments. The young server behind the counter asks politely what I would like to accompany my sandwich with. Too many decisions!!! as their chalkboard has a variety of top end sauces/ condiments and toppings which all seem very decadent and would compliment the sandwiches well. The sauce options are the following:

- Basil Pesto Mayo
- Chipolte Mayo
- Charamoula Mayo- A Moroccan-inspired mayonnaise, it blends the flavours of garlic, cilantro, lemon juice, and smoked paprika into a one-of-a-kind topping.
- Special BBQ Sauce- made in-house and slowly simmered using a custom recipe that includes the sweet taste of molasses and maple syrup paired with the bite of cider vinegar and Dijon mustard.
- Hummous
- Spicy Sauce

Toppings are an additional $0.90 as well and includes chili roasted red onions, arugula, carmelized onions, and Sautéed Cremini Mushrooms

So I order the pulled pork and as suggested by the young chap - i pair it with their special in house bbq sauce and carmalized onions. My friend Pete gets the seared steak sandwich which is served cold with the charamoula mayo.
We wait outside while they prepare our sandwiches which gets to our table in less than 5 minutes! They are wrapped tightly in an white tin foil like gifts waiting to be opened!
The first bit is heaven... my pulled pork is juicy with the perfect portion of the BBQ sauce that has just a bit of a kick. The bun is soft to the point that it acts as a sponge and soaks up the juices from the actual sandwich yet firm enough to keep together until your very last bite. Pete's is really delicious too - it's the mayo that makes the sandwich - creamy and spicy that hits the back of your throat.
I'm perfectly satisfied by the time we're done! What a treat! Will definitely be back for some more!
